THE MEANING OF ENKI

A name rooted
in knowledge.

WISDOM / CREATION / KNOWLEDGE

ENKI takes its name from the ancient Sumerian deity associated with wisdom, freshwater, knowledge, creation and craftsmanship.

His name is commonly interpreted asLord of the Earth, reflecting his connection to the natural world and the life-sustaining waters beneath it.

Originally worshipped in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Eridu, Enki was later known as Ea in Akkadian and Babylonian traditions. He was regarded as a source of knowledge, ingenuity and creative intelligence.

In Mesopotamian iconography, Enki is frequently depicted with streams of water flowing from his shoulders, sometimes containing fish, representing the life-giving freshwater over which he presided.
